Health and Wellness Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, is calling on Caribbean governments to align national policies to health and climate change.
He was addressing the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO’s Project Concepts on Health and Climate Change on Monday.
The Minister says a majority of lifestyle illnesses and deaths are linked to adverse climate conditions.
Health and Wellness Minister, Dr. Chi Tufton was reading from a report compiled at the recent third Global Conference on Health and Climate Change in Grenada.
He says it’s time policymakers view healthcare as directly linked to economic development.
That is why the Health Minister wants all Caribbean policymakers to give greater focus to public health.
Minister Tufton says the region can adjust the way it constructs buildings and develop communities, to better withstand adverse weather conditions.
He also wants an adjustment to the policy which sees only 1.5% of international climate change funding, being allocated to the health sector.
