10 am update: Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party, (JLP) Leader, Andrew Holness, is hailing the late former Cabinet Minister, Douglas Vaz as a patriot who served his country and party with great distinction.

Prime Minister Holness paid tribute to Mr. Vaz during a post on social media moments after news emerged that Mr. Vaz had passed on.

The Prime Minister says it is with deep sadness that he learnt of the passing of Douglas Vaz.

The Prime Minister says his thoughts are with the Vaz family at this time.

Douglas Vaz died during his sleep this morning. He was 83 years old.

Vaz was an influential former Industry and Commerce Minister in the former JLP-administration of the 1980s.

He also served as President of the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA) & Member of Parliament for North East St. Andrew.

Vaz was a pivotal figure in the ideological struggle between socialism and capitalism in the 1970s and the 1980s. He was among at least five (5) prominent JLP politicians who famously fell out with then JLP Leader, Edward Seaga, in the 1990s as they pressed for a transformation of the party.

Douglas Vaz is the father of current Cabinet Minister and West Portland Member of Parliament, the JLP’s Daryl Vaz and the father-in-law of philanthropist and East Portland MP,  Annmarie Vaz.

Central Manchester Member of Parliament and former PNP General Secretary, Peter Bunting, is also paying tribute to Douglas Vaz.

In a tweet this morning, Mr. Bunting commented – “Rest In Peace Douglas Vaz. Douglas made significant contributions in both the public and private sectors. Dougie was a conviction politician – willing to speak up and take a stand for what he believed in. Condolences to Ricky, Daryl, Wayne, Noel and the entire family.”
