New Traffic Arrangements For Three Miles Tomorrow
by Primrose Oliver
Effective midday tomorrow, June 13, 2018, new traffic arrangements will be implemented in the vicinity of Three Miles in Kingston. The changes are being put in place as a section of the southbound lanes of Marcus Garvey Drive is to be closed to facilitate sewerage works. The closed section of roadway will be from Marcus Garvey Drive’s intersection with Spanish Town Road to its intersection with Bell Road.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says that the closure was supposed to take effect on Tuesday but after further consultation with relevant stakeholders, additional changes were necessary. He says the new traffic arrangements that are to be implemented are the most suitable at this time.
Due to the closure, there will be no direct access to Marcus Garvey Drive for motorists travelling from either sides of Spanish Town Road or from Hagley Park Road. Traffic transiting through Three Miles, heading onto Marcus Garvey Drive should travel along Spanish Town Road (in the direction of Downtown Kingston); turn right onto Development Road, then onto Ashenheim Road and exit onto Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Pure National Ice Company. Both Development Road and Ashenheim Road will accommodate one-way traffic only.
Mr. Shaw says that two-way traffic will be allowed on Bell Road and Little Bell Road only for motorists wishing to access businesses directly in the zone of closure. Temporary median barriers will be implemented along Spanish Town Road from Three Miles to the Delacree Park Housing Scheme, to separate and control traffic travelling in opposite directions. He says temporary barriers will also be erected on the southbound lanes of Marcus Garvey Drive,
between Bell Road and Ashenheim Road, however, local business interests will be allowed to use the road. No right turning movement will be allowed from Oakland Road onto Spanish Town Road.
To assist traffic flow in the area, a temporary traffic signal has been erected at the intersection of Spanish Town Road and Development Road. The closure of a section Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Three Miles is expected to last approximately eight weeks.
Mr. Shaw is reminding road users who regularly use the Three Miles area, and its environs, that the area continues to be an active work zone and traffic delays are likely to occur even with the changes. He says the Agency continues to assess the impact of the work on traffic and will make necessary changes as the work progresses.
Motorists and pedestrians are being advised to exercise extreme caution while traversing the Three Miles area and to obey the instructions of flag persons and posted warning signs.
