Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to immediately intervene to avert strike action at the Kingston Container Terminal.
He says workers who provide lashing services have threatened to go on strike in protest of non-payment from two private shipping companies.
Lashing involves using ropes to secure ships at the terminal. Mr Phillips says the problems originated in 2016.
He says the Shipping Association, which represents the workers, met with the Labour Ministry this week. But he says the workers still demand Prime Minster Holness’ intervention because the shipping services fall under his portfolio.
In a statement yesterday, Mr Phillips says the operations at the Port of Kingston could be affected by industrial action as early as Monday.
He says any industrial action at the facility could negatively impact the country’s reputation and bring operations at the port into disrepute.
