Director of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Robert Morgan, is hitting back at critics who say the government could pay teachers more if it cuts apparent wasteful spending.
The Opposition Leader, Dr Peter Phillips, yesterday chided the Andrew Holness-led administration for reportedly spending millions of dollars on motor vehicles and a de-bushing programme during the run-up to the 2016 Local Government election.
But Mr. Morgan says those monies couldn’t pay the extra wages the teachers and other public sector workers are demanding.
Mr. Morgan says the government is still operating under strict measures by the International Monetary Fund, IMF. As a result, he says the administration must remain fiscally prudent.
Mr. Morgan also says the current wage offer is better than what was offered during the last round of wage negotiations.
