by Dwight Fraser
Former West Indies cricket team captain Chivnarine Chanderpaul will be awarded the honorary doctors of law later this year by the University of the West Indies (UWI) .
It is has been described as a deserving appreciation for an unsung hero who was denied the chance to become the leading test scorer in West Indies cricket, and “forced to retire.”
The left-handed batsman scored 11,867 runs at an average of 51, with 30 centuries in an illustrious career of 164 tests to end at the second place in the list of all-time West Indies run-scorers, 86 runs short of legendary Brian Lara with 11,953 runs.
Chanderpaul is only the second modern-day player, after India’s Sachin Tendulkar, whose career stretched over two decades.
He led the West Indies 14 times in tests. In 268 one day internationals he scored 8,778 runs at an average of 41.60 and he also played 22 T/20 Internationals.
