Jamaica’s Reggae Music

VIEWED 222 TIMES

Jamaica is an island known for its reggae music as well as its beauty. Jamaica is filled with brilliant color and flavor. This is truly evident in the diversity of its people, beaches, food, and it’s music.

Jamaica’s music has moved through many different variations. We have heard and seen performances of rhythms such as Dub, Ska, Congo, and Dancehall. All of these rhythms are known across the world as reggae. This music is a combination of African, American, Blues, and Jamaican folk rhythms. Though this style of music is original only to Jamaica, it is known and loved globally. This music had its origin with ska in the late 1950’s right about the time Jamaica got it’s independence from England.

It all started with the sound systems, and the massive open-air discos that established themselves on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica. It was in the 1970’s that the late Bob Marley took this art and made it an international craze with roots reggae, which was a heavy, spiritual and conscious sound. In 2002 Bob Marley’s album Exodus won album of the century. This proud, bold island had now made its mark on the world first because of its music.

In the 1990’s dancehall and reggae evolved, accompanied by the opinion that it contained more offensive lyrics that would encourage street violence and dismay. However, recently I have seen and heard a recent development going back to more socially and spiritually aware lyrics known by some to be the New Roots Movement. I find that this is a good turn for music in Jamaica and the rest of the world. One of the leading producers in Jamaica, Boby Digital, said:

“If you feed people with violence they’re going to be vile. If you fill them with love, they’re going to be lovely.”

Today you can see the great performances as the artists are showcased at events such as the Caribbean Music Expo, and Jamaica Sumfest. New Reggae artists such as Shaggy, Sean Paul, and Abijah have brought reggae even further internationally. These events usually take place on the north coast (i.e. Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay, Montego Bay, Discovery Bay) of Jamaica, and sometimes the south coast such as Negril, Jamaica.

It is highly recommended that those who are truly interested in Jamaica’s culture and music attend one of these shows. Some of these stage shows can be days long, so if you can’t be there for the entire show, you can catch at least one day of it.

Illnesses Of The Elderly – 4 Most Common Ailments Affecting The Elderly

As an individual grows older, he becomes more susceptible to various ailments and illnesses that may render him incapacitated in some way or other. This is a sad fact of life and every one of us has to face this eventuality at some point. However, not all ailments affecting the aged are incurable, only a few are untreatable. There are many ailments affecting the elderly that a caregiver comes across and learns to cope with. It is painful to watch a loved one succumb to a disease, but this is an inevitable fact. Some background information on a few ailments may help preparation for the worst.

1. Cancer: This is the most serious of all ailments. Over two thirds of the elderly are affected by this disease. Lung and breast cancer are the most common, with skin cancer making the occasional appearance. Cancer can be treated successfully nowadays, but the success rate is low in aged patients. Senior citizens are not strong enough to cope with the course of chemotherapy. An early diagnosis of cancer increases the chances of a full recovery. Thus, any anomaly should be checked out immediately by a medical professional.

2. Dementia: A large number of seniors suffer from Dementia. Dementia is caused due to damage of the connections between the brain and nerve endings. This ailment is not curable and its causes are unknown. There is no effective treatment for this disease, but some drugs may help to temporarily control the symptoms. The most potent and common form of Dementia Is Alzheimer’s Disease. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease build up gradually over a period of a few years. It is frustrating for the patients as they become more and more confused and lose all their memory.

3. Parkinson’s disease: This is another disease related to the nerve cells, and its causes are yet unknown. Dementia affects the mental health of the individual whereas Parkinson’s disease is primarily a physical disability. The symptoms of Parkinson’s are uncontrollable shaking of the limbs, that is just as frustrating. There is no cure for this disease, although it may be contained to some extent for a short period, with the use of drugs. After a certain period, the symptoms cannot be controlled.

4. Diabetes: This ailment is a result of bad diet and considered to be a lifestyle disease. High fat and sugar intake may be the causative factors. Diabetes is caused due to the body’s inability to produce insulin to keep blood sugar levels under control. This disease is curable with diet and medication either in injection or tablet form. Great attention must be paid to wounds in diabetics as the wounds have a tendency to degenerate faster than a non-diabetic. The result may be amputation of limbs, which is quite common. Hence, a swift diagnosis and treatment is necessary for Diabetes.

How You Can Stop Sandflies From Ruining Your Beach Vacation

Sandflies can be a nuisance and in a few cases quite dangerous, so it is best to be aware that they exist and learn what you can do to ensure they do not ruin your vacation. Most visitors to tropical climates are aware that there may be bugs with which they do not want to get too friendly. They are usually worried about mosquitoes, but few people are aware that sandflies can actually pose a bigger threat to the enjoyment of their vacation.

What is a sandfly?

People call all sorts of small biting insects sandflies. Wikipedia states: “Sandfly (or sand fly) is a colloquial name for any species or genus of flying, biting, bloodsucking Dipteran encountered in sandy areas.” They are difficult to see as they are much smaller than mosquitoes.

Why are sandflies a problem?

The female of the species bites and sucks your blood. The bite itself is not dangerous or very painful, but it can cause itching and in some people severe allergic reactions. If bites are scratched, they can get infected and become very painful. Some people do not seem to be bothered by sandflies at all while others are ravaged by these creatures. Locals do not seem to be affected, so it may be that they build up an immunity to sandfly bites.

Where and when are sandflies found?

Some people say they cannot fly, but jump. If they do fly, they cannot fly very far as sandflies will only be found very close to the wet sandy beaches and in vegetation like seaweed. So unless you have been sitting or lying on the beach, you will only get bitten around the ankles and feet. And only in the early hours of the morning and at dusk.

How can one protect oneself?

If you have an allergic reaction to sandfly bites, it is best for you to stay away from the beach at dawn and dusk. If that is not possible, then you should cover your body, especially your feet and lower legs. Socks and shoes on the beach may not look attractive, but it is better to look a bit strange than to be a meal for these creatures. There are many personal insect repellents that keep away sandflies, so investing in one that suits you is a good idea.

Because some people do not see sandflies and do not feel it when they are bitten, they may think that they have been bitten by bedbugs. The Trelawny Health Department in Jamaica has advised that there have been no incidents of bedbugs reported for decades. Once when visitors complained of bedbugs, they would not believe that they were bitten by sandflies, but the health inspector examined everywhere and found no trace of bedbugs. He advised that bedbugs are not too small to be seen and that one can smell their presence.

If you do return from your vacation and you develop itching bites which have become painful, you should see a doctor for professional advice and care. When you are enjoying a beach vacation in Jamaica villas, cottages or apartments, it’s best to be aware and take precautions against sandflies, especially if you are predisposed to allergic reactions.

The Real Reason Women Want to Vacation in Jamaica Villas

It’s a fact. Most family vacations are planned by the lady in the household. Sure, she runs the choices by her partner, but it’s mostly the woman who determines where the family will spend their annual vacation.

With all the choices available, so many women opt for staying in Jamaica villas. Why?

1. A wide range of accommodation.

From large luxurious houses, dripping with every imaginable amenity, that will put even five star hotels to shame, to comfortable cozy cottages with character and charm, yet easy on the budget, you will find them all in Jamaica. Villas with pools, hot tubs and spectacular views will appeal to those who really want a treat. And there are many villas situated right on the white sand beaches for which Jamaica is famous.

2. All kinds of sports.

And when you have had enough of the beach, there is so much to do in Jamaica. If you are sporty, you have a great selection of golf courses. Tennis, mountain bike riding and horseback riding are always readily available too. And every type of water sport is on offer. Snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, sailing, bodyboarding, kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing, and more. There are also rivers where you can go tubing and kayaking. In the hills, you can go trekking and you will also find canopy zip wire rides.

3. Lots of Beauty Spots.

Blessed with natural beauty, Jamaica is the island of variety featuring many world famous visitor attractions like Dunn’s River Falls, Fern Gully, and the Blue Mountains. As Jamaica is a small island, wherever your Jamaica villas are located, the scenic coastline is not far away, and the forests in the interior are also easily accessible.

4. Privacy and freedom.

Of course, Jamaica villas allow you to do what you want when you want, giving you the kind of freedom and privacy that you cannot get in a hotel or resort vacation. And don’t forget value – you get a whole house, not just a room.

But what’s the real reason that women choose Jamaica villas?

These are many good reasons why women want to vacation in Jamaica villas, but they are not the real reason. The real reason is that Jamaica villas come with staff. Great staff! Depending on the size of the accommodation and how many people are being catered for, Jamaica villas will provide at least one cook who will do your grocery shopping and prepare all your meals. Staff will include housekeeping services so the rooms are made every day and the whole house is kept clean and tidy. There is usually a gardener/houseman too. Some even provide a butler!

That’s the real reason. If there were no staff, who would be planning and preparing meals, serving them up, and then dealing with a messy kitchen after? Who would be making the beds and cleaning the bathrooms? With staff, the lady of the house gets to have a vacation too, as there is staff to do all the hard work.

And imagine returning home and not having to face doing a week’s accumulation of family laundry. The staff in Jamaica villas will do your laundry, iron and fold everything which you can pack neatly into your suitcase.

The lady of the family returns home from her vacation in Jamaica villas, not only having had fun and well-rested, but also not having to catch up on housework. The provision of staff to cook, clean and pamper is the real reason women want to vacation in Jamaica villas.

Third World Cop is a Great Movie to Learn How to Speak Jamaican

I recently watched the film Third World Cop and I must say it is a great film for the student of Jamaican Patois or anyone that wants to learn to speak Jamaican. The movie is based in Kingston, Jamaica, and has an all Jamaican cast that is made up of famous dancehall artists like Elephant Man and Ninjaman and many prominent Jamaican actors and actresses. For anyone that has seen Dancehall Queen, many members of the cast also play a role in Third World Cop such as Paul Campbell, Mark Danvers and Audrey Reid.

The movie is the story of a police office from Kingston who goes by the name Capone (Paul Campbell). Capone is transferred from Port Antonio back to Kingston in an effort to breakdown the organized crime occurring in the Dungle neighborhood of Kingston, where Capone is originally from. Upon his return to Kingston, Capone is given the assignment to investigate gun smuggling into the neighborhood. When Capone goes to the Dungle, he learns that his best friend’s little brother, Ratty, is a huge community leader. Although, Ratty is a hero in the community, he is much more involved in the underworld dealings than people would like to believe. When Capone learns that Ratty is involved, he does everything he can to stop and help Ratty and also stop the criminal kingpins arming the neighborhood.

I do not want to give too much of the movie away because I truly think it holds a special place for the person looking to learn how to speak Jamaican. No, the movie will never be a Hollywood blockbuster and it is not the best film quality, but there are so many other gems in this movie. From a language perspective, this movie is in the top 5 for Jamaican Patois. The language largely used throughout the film is Patois and the DVD allows you to use subtitles, so this really helps in building your understanding. The most famous patois expression in the movie is “We run tings, tings nuh run we.” The pronunciation is that of native speakers so you hear the words in the right context and emotions. You also see people greeting each other and just having everyday interaction. This is invaluable and makes the film well worth watching.

From a cultural standpoint, the film also sheds light on the “bad man” element of Jamaica. This is a recurring theme in many Jamaican films. A “Bad Man” is a gangster for all intensive purposes and many of the Jamaican movies that are not focused on Rastafari put emphasis on the gangster element of Jamaica. Along with the “bad man” you see the role of the police in Jamaican society and how much respect or lack thereof the community has for them. Finally, like most films based in the developing world, there is a glimpse into the struggle of people trying to make something of themselves, but still being held down by other forces.

All in all, I say this film is well worth your time and really worth buying. As mentioned, the film is invaluable in learning to speak Jamaican. I would highly recommend this film.
