Executive Director of Stand Up For Jamaica, Carla Gulatto says facilities such as Bellvue aren’t ideal alternatives for mentally challenged people who’ve broken the law.
Ms. Gulatto’s statement comes a day after a new study released by her organisation Stand Up for Jamaica.
It has revealed that hundreds of mentally ill persons are still languishing in Jamaica’s prisons without adequate treatment, some without ever being tried or sentenced.
But she says institution like Bellvue should be used as an alternative place to accommodate them.
Instead she says the facility in its current condition should be burnt to the ground.
Ms. Gulatto also says there’re programmes that have designed specifically for mentally ill inmates.
She also says the medical care given to the mentally ill inmates is not acceptable.
